As long as it comes up naturally during a conversation and it's not shot out as one of the first items on somebody's sick "list" , it's fine.
That's why you give your date a 4 page questionaire on a clipboard with the pen on the chain thingy....right away. Oh yeah you also check them against the predator database, check for divorce and other legal proceedings, blood test, credit rating and the terrorist no-fly list.
After that, you can get right to the romance part.
For me it depends who's doing the asking and how much I know about them. My job is a bit more "politically sensitive" and it depends on how far people lean to the left or the right how much I'll talk about it. If I don't know someone very well, I keep my job description very vague. If I'm on a date with someone, chances are I already know we're on the same page politically, so I'll talk about it more.
If it turns out you are a ninja assassin for the CIA I will still like you TT, maybe even more!

Agree, its a normal part of getting to know someone. But when the first or second question is "Are you hourly or salaried?" Its fairly obvious what they are looking for.
Well, I haven't been on a 'date' in a really long time (in a long term relationship), but I have been on 'group dates' and have been chewed out for what I do. I work with private jets (I'm on the maintenance side) and I've been told I'm scum, been told that I'm single handedly destroying the planet and that I'm 'too elitist' to hang out with.
So...I'm a little more hesitant to tell people what I do. I usually just tell them I'm in aviation and leave it at that.

Too funny. I got that same treatment from a few granola heads in college when I told them I was considering Nuclear Engineering. Fast forward 20 years and nuclear power isn't the scary boogeyman anymore.
That would be a big turn-off to me especially if I'm just meeting a woman for the first time. What's her purpose for wanting to know my job so soon. Once I get a feel for you then you can ask me about my job because to me and most people, a woman asking about a man's job wants to know how much he makes. That's a big red-flag for me and most other men.

I know that feeling...I did a stint in the Environmental area for an oil company. I could have said I make mittens from Kittens and got a better response.

If it makes you feel better, when I tell people I'm in health care, I sometimes ger a lecture about how insurance companies are a bunch of moneygrubbing bloodsuckers who have ruined America. (And I don't even work for an insurance company.) My sister-in-law works in the mortgage industry and gets the same thing.
