People like to join as couples, but monogamy is a choice and a social convention, not a natural or biological imperative. If it were natural, then people would pair, stay paired, and not stray or cheat except in unusual circumstances. As we all know, estimates of cheating range from 20% to over 60%, and we all know it happens often. Monogamy is not natural.

However, monogamy - or at least serial monogamy - is a great social convention that has many benefits for most people and for society. IF it is actually followed. Many can't actually put it into practice successfully.

Some can practice it with true fidelity and commitment, and are happy doing so. Those are the successes that motivate others to strive to achieve it. Monogamy is alive and well, but can never be assumed.

I don't think I have a problem being monogamous. If I thought it would be a problem, I would just stay single.
