You hear continuously persons saying profound "truths" of life, but are they really true? Kind of like:

- "You should be nice to everyone" - I think practically all in the world can shoot this one down, based on experience/observation alone.

- "Take nothing for granted" - But taking things for granted is human nature, so this doesn't make sense, does it?

Why people say these things really beats me, but I guess humans are complex after all.

There what I call niceties, some are sincere, the rest are superficial social etiquette.
There's nothing profound about it.

OK, so they are only said for the sake of it? I guess it's how humans are, so nobody can complain.

That's the sort of things some say to "other" people. Do as I preach, not as I do! I try to refrain from crapola like that, particularly when I know somebody has a real problem. Not having the same problem doesn't mean I should sugar-coat theirs and feed them BS.

To define your examples:

  • You should be nice to everyone - Honestly, why would you even want to be mean to someone? Then again, maybe the phrase should be updated for modern use: You should be diplomatically correct to everyone. Thing is, once you burn a bridge, you can never go back. Even if someone does you wrong, there may be a time in your life that you'll need that person again. Hell, it's happened to me several times before. So yes, I believe that it's truth.
  • Take nothing for granted - Really, this should be obvious. Yes, we do take things for granted, but this is advice not to. Everything can be taken away in a second, and then all we're left with is ourselves.
Advice is never meant to replace human nature, it's intended to build upon it. There's always some aspect of truth in these "sage sayings".

The one truth of life I live and die by is this:

"You only have one nose - don't blow it!"

Six Truths of Life

1. You cannot touch all your top teeth with your tongue.

2. All idiots, after reading the first truth, will try it.

3. And discover that the first truth is a lie and feel superior because they can do it.

4. You're smiling now because you're an idiot.

5. You soon will forward this to another idiot.

6. There's still a stupid smile on your face.

I apologize about this.I'm an idiot and I needed company ...

And I know you have a sense of humor and some teeth.
