I've never had a woman refuse to give me her number because of my basic flip top phone. That said, I just upgraded to something more upscale, similar to an I-phone, so it might help me look more "money." It will go better with my Gucci's....

Sometimes the cheapest phone won't do, for reasons other than vanity. I have a BlackBerry and I'm not vacuous. My phone isn't a status symbol, it's a tool that is often necessary for my job when I'm traveling.

If I were to make judgments about other people, based on something as silly as what type of phone they have, then yes, that might be vacuous.

Unless they are still using one of those giant flip phones from the 90's, then no I'm not concerned. My razor got water damaged and instead of getting a new one and having to extend my contract, I'm using my exes old Nokia. Call it cheap or frugal or whatever. I also use coupons to go out to eat sometimes.
