WHY????
I can think of a few reasons why SOME women might find it irritating:

1) Every guy thinks he's an expert;
2) Every guy's favorite team is the absolute best;
3) Every guy has to trot out all the useless statistics he's memorized;
4) Every guy is willing to spout and defend his knowledge 'til the cows come home;
5) If they're talking sports they're ignoring the women;
6) Some women won't have the first idea of what they're talking about;
7) Such discussions can get heated and loud;
8) Many arm chair quarterbacks are also couch potatoes and lumpy;
9) Knuckle-dragging and chest-beating are distracting in the work place;
10) It's not pleasant seeing grown men cry when their team loses!

I'm a guy, and I HATE sports !!
Sure, I like to go to the odd rugby game, but I'm not gonna cry about it if i miss it.

The list below pretty much sums up why I spent many nights at the bar completely bored out of my mind !!

Sports are boring, that's why. I mean, when I was a kid I was a rabid Yankee fan but I sort of outgrew it.

It's like women who watch damn modeling shows or something. If you love it so much get out and do it or just shut up.

I am sure there are some women who love sports. The rest of us do not care about so and so's RBIs or the NFL except when the game is over so it doesn't preempt my programs.

My dad was a SPORTS NUT in his time (now I don't think he cares). I remember Sundays we couldn't go in the livingroom from 1-6 because the Jets or Giants or Mets or someone was playing. He'd be in there shouting about them. He's normally calm but it was his release valve. There's nothing wrong with that, of course. I am just glad my husband doesn't watch sports.

And no man has ever interrupted you? No man has ever interrupted women?

When I worked I never hesitated to interrupt anyone who wasn't discussing a work related subject.

This country would be a lot more productive if no one was allowed to talk about sports, grandchildren, or their fingernails at work.

I don't think all women mind that, maybe some. But I'm sure on the flip side there are some men who don't like to hear women talk about sports either.

I'm having a bout of cognitive dissonance.
This and Who?Me?'s post are really the only ones which answer the initial question. The bottom line is that when you're at work you're supposed to be working, not discussing personal issues. Sports and any other non-work related topics can be discussed on breaks, during lunch or after work in the local watering hole.
