I actually went back and forth on this topic when I was using on-line dating. Some of the gals I would contact obviously had a ton of guys of guys contacting them and several told me that when they'd write a nice "not interested" note back they'd get hateful nasty responses.

So, some gals I would respond "not interested to" but a few others (like a married gal) I did ignore. I did have one gal turn nasty on me too, oh well.

So, I never take on-line dating personally whether they respond or not. I actually got a date from one gal for being really cool when she told me she wasn't interested. She came back and we had a nice date but were just on different pages.

So, I don't think there is a right or wrong approach...we are all on there to meet people in a time-efficient manner...not trade emails with people that will be nasty back to us etc.

Well you are adorably cute, so I doubt she wasn't attracted to you...she just probably connected with someone else...you didn't say or do anything wrong at all...just keep being open and nice and you will find the right person!
