I agree. However, I am typcially drawn towards characters and people who don't follow the status quo. I don't really connect with the average guy who goes to work, loves his job, comes home to family, goes to church on Sunday, plays golf, and nothing seems to phase him. He's happy to follow the herd. That's not me and I can't bond with someone like that. I don't have anything against them, but a guy like that would bore me to tears.
I like people who are interesting, well traveled, a little bit crazy (not running around in a black cape with a hockey mask crazy, just offbeat or funny-crazy), someone who gets the jokes. If you have a dark or sarcastic sense of humor all the better. I get along with people who can see through the B.S. and hypocrisy of everyday life, but aren't bitter. Like Sunflower said, no extremes. Being too nice can be just as annoying as too obnoxious or loud.
