Eh, I can't say I love it, but I sure have a knack for finding it! I guess I just want normal things with abnormal people and it just ain't happenin'... Then again, they claim likes attracts likes... so I better stop here before I get too deep into the logic...
I have a friend who has been in a 3 year relationship and I can't say that he is abusive, because it seems like mutual combat. I am so sick of this drama! They fight constantly and once, while in the backseat, they got into an all out brawl on the highway that almost led to an accident. I swear they have this Ike and Tina/Romeo and Juliet type of relationship. They have broken up countless times, but always end up back together. What is up with these type of unions? Do any of you know people like this?
I bet you they are both addicted to drama and have great sex that keeps them together.
Yes, I have known people like that. Seems the sex is great in a lot of cases, expecially the make up sex. I'm not making light of it, but it is the glue for a lot of these relationships.

I have known people who act like this.
Seems one aspect of that is passion overriding logic.
From all the fighting it is obvious they would be better off apart, yet something in the both of them is drawn to it.

Well there is something magically intense about tension. . . it definitely makes the furnace hot lol.
Years ago, I dated a girl, and her sister and her husband were like the couple in the OP.
THey loved each other, of that I have no doubt, but very rarely did a weekend go past without them having a full scale argument. We're talking fisticuffs, crockery throwing, full on screaming matches here.
I stayed at their house a couple of times and saw it first hand. Yet. they'd be up the next morning, and be all lovey dovey again.
last I heard, they were still together.
My g/f also has a couple of friends who fit the description.
I guess some folks just like to do it differently.

Maybe they're Italian!
