<shrug> Yes, I suspect it's HIGHLY correlated to the economy.

Hey, we have sex slavery rings here in the US, pedophilia rings and it's a known fact (I know 2 in real life) that you can get a mail-order bride from places like Russia.

We also know lots of people that date someone for some sort of benefit even though they can't stand them. (This applies to guys too that date a girl only for sex when they are horny, bored and have no other immediate options, or let them stay at their place rent free etc. etc. etc.)

In the big scheme of things it's 2 consenting adults with no one being forced to do anything they don't want. Not my cup of tea but there you go.
