I've heard this sort of argument countless times before. "But what if someone just hunts and catches their own meat?"

Usually from a person that indulges routinely in factory farmed animal products, just like overwhelming majority of people in the Western world.

Please read the UN report on the devastating effects of animal husbandry. It wasn't written by a vegan.

Hi xxbabeechick,

That is usually what vegans say *rolls eyes*. Animal husbandry is devastating because how its implemented. Beef is a disaster and we built irrigation dams to grow nearly worthless cattle fodder when far more efficient buffalo(who don't need fodder) and world class salmon fisheries were ruined.

Again there is no purely moral position to take. Since I use human powered means to a train year round even in a zone 5 and I grow or forage a significant part of my diet including weeds on noxious weed lists, you have a lot of ground to make including the dead zones created by fertilizer run off. A truck full of lettuce still makes road kill. Just being a vegan doesn't cut it and in some parts of the world it makes it worse. The point is in some parts of the world it simply makes no sense. There would be no such thing as an Inuit.
You can be a vegan but not morally superior since there is nothing behind it.

Down the street from my house is a plaza. There are a few stores there, but not many. There's a huge parking lot. There's some kind of carny petting zoo set up there right now until Sunday. It's been raining the past two nights and there are a number of animals in these little pens, in the rain, in a vacant parking lot, standing there. It's so stupid.

Interesting. And why does she have to drink, smoke, gamble, do drugs, or eat meat in order to be considered "enjoying" herslf??

Why..why..do people think that unless you do something of the above, you simply cannot be enjoying life? Why is it that some folks just cannot comprehend that people can enjoy their lives without indulging in what others think they should indulge in?

Im no vegetarian. I love meat. But, i dont smoke or drink. I cannot tell you the people i've hung out with who are just perplexed that i didnt want to drink. It's like, folks dont know what to do if you dont drink.
I've had people damn near shove it down my throat..insist on buying me a drink..just nag me about it, etc. And these are my supposed friends..women and men.

Im like look..I don't drink. Maybe once in a real long while i'll have a wine cooler. And it takes me hours to drink that. Im not a drinker. Deal with it. I can have tons of fun without boozing, and I have fun all the time.

Why can't some people get that?? Do you really not know how to enjoy a persons company unless they drink, smoke, or do some recreational drug?

I go through the exact same thing. So annoying. I had a friend tell me (and my husband) once: "it's so sad you guys can't enjoy stuff like this" What? I was p*ssed. What do you mean can't? I choose not to because I don't enjoy it. I think it's very sad that he can't like himself or feel "cool" without it (alcohol). I know not all drinkers are like that, it's pretty sad and immature, but I know he's like this and he ignorantly has the nerve to feel sorry for me? Seriously? I had another friend who said we're boring and we're wasting our lives because we play video games instead of going out and partying-- which consists of taking pills then sitting on a couch and staring. Wow, what an awesome fulfilling life experience! You're really living!

These are very close friends...I wish they understood.

Basically because we start to feel guilty when someone doesn't have a vice at all, or it comes off as not the norm. I don't drink alcohol personally, I may have like a light or low alcohol brew like once in a blue moon. I do like to hit the casinos and have a steak though. It just varies.

True, that doesn't sound mind blowing.

But there is something to be said for living outside the box. Which now takes the oh so not revolutionary meaning of getting away from the computer screen.

i know couples where one is vegetarian one not...no big deal...there are always way to solve this issue...since i am in usa,i very seldom eat meat...and not because i decided to become suddenly a vegetarian, but more because i do not like the taste..in europe we have our own animals, everything naturall,organic..excellent taste.our own fields, provide natural food for animals,so meat tatste delicious...i do not find this taste hier in usa..not even in organic meat..

i ate less and less meat..my junior and husby eat more meat...i take the vegetables, they eat the meat, what is the problem???no problem..this woudl not be a problem for me...only if she or he wants me to give up meat...as long as she respect me the way i am and my wishes, fine with me...looks like a great person,be happy to find somebody like this!!
