Religion cannot heal mental illness. I believe it just makes it worse in many cases.
You beliefs are not based on truth. Luk 8:35Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

I agree.

Interesting snippet from a study on 'possessed' women in China:
Quote:
DSM-IV reminds us that dissociative symptoms are also found in acute stress disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and somatization disorder. Moreover, belief in "possession" might also be part of a delusion associated with a thought disorder. Patients in cultures that endorse possession as a plausible cause for pathology might assume when experiencing any number of general medical or psychiatric illnesses that they have been possessed.
In other words, if someone actually believes in possession--and their religion or culture endorses that delusion--that, in itself, may be a sign they are mentally ill.
Continuous rejection of reality in favor of religious delusion is heartbreakingly sad to me.
