The book of Ecclesiastes speaks of "a time to be born and a time to die." Do you think this means that God in His sovereignty has somehow appointed a time of our death that can't be changed...by all our valiant efforts to reduce our cholesterol levels, watch our weight, wear seatbelts etc.?
Sometimes I think I tend to lean both ways. In some ways I believe God has total control over my life and the timing of my death. However, I certainly don't take foolish risks with my life, at least I try not to! So...which is is it? Can we control the time of our the death or is it TOTALLY in God's hands, His sovereignty? What do you think?
Oh man...I hate to bring it up BUT...I think this discussion is very simular to the free will one!
I think that with all our efforts to be healthy does make a difference, as well as if we are being unhealthy...BUT...God knows what we will do with our lives therefore he already knows the time and day of our passing. Not to mention the fact that many die suddenly in car accidents and such...he already knows the story before it unfolds. He has a plan for our life and our death and we cannot control the bottom line. He's holding the universe together, he's got our lives as well.

You're right. This could get into the free will thing, jazzed and that's not really what I'm thinking about! I just assume God knows the future and I don't believe in predestination, but I guess somehow I think a predestined time of death is possible even if nothing else is.
haha he he--I think that for a Christian we are on a mission for God and we are here for whatever time God alots for that mission-imho of course---can God extend your life of course....my great grandmother wanted to stay alive long enough to get to hold me way back in 73, she prayed and God let her live three weeks after I was born..coincendence.....me thinks not. However....I think if we make dumb deciisons, Chrisitian or not-we can affect how long we are here..ie--drugs, etc.
I see what you're saying Kaykay. I think that ultimately there is a time and a place for our passing. I know that my dad fought his illness to walk me down the isle at my wedding and passed two months after. At the same time I think there are probably many examples of people who pray to have extended life and still pass. I think that ultimately God has say so as to "when".

Oh you KNOW kay just cringed at those words! Don't get jeff started again!
Don't worry kay and everyone else, I'll stay on topic. I picked the combo option. But the bottom line? I really don't know. I think God does, and it's my job to try to care for myself and live a long life. I could live to be old, and I could get run over by a car tomorrow. God knows and I don't.

So just why would you attribute that to your god? How do you know that she wouldn't have lived that long anyway?
The time to die is fast approaching. Thus labor and sorrow fill the world. This is given us ,that we may always have something to do;none were sent in the world to be idle.
I believe God is in total control of when we die, just like He is control over when we're born.
