He said that as recently as the 1970s, pedophilia wasn't considered an absolute evil but rather part of a spectrum of behaviors that people refused to judge in the name of tolerance and relativism. "In the 1970s, pedophilia was theorized as something fully in conformity with man and even with children," the pope said. "It was maintained - even within the realm of Catholic theology - that there is no such thing as evil in itself or good in itself. There is only a 'better than' and a 'worse than.' Nothing is good or bad in itself."
Is this statement by the pope out of context? I certainly don't remember pedophilia being accepted as anything but absolute evil in the 70s...He is making a lame attempt to justify the actions of pedophile priests and is fooling nobody except perhaps the blinded faithful.

Benedict also said, however, that the scandal must be seen in a broader social context,in which child pornography is seemingly considered normal by society and drug use and sexual tourism are on the rise.
When exactly did this happen? Did I miss something? I think child abusers should be hung by their you know what, but then again, I'm an "immoral non-believer" of the faith. I think he's getting normal society mixed up with his pedophile priest.

The only way in which society can be held even a little responsible for this, is that we automatically give someone a moral free pass and trust when we hear words such as preacher. Surely so-and-so would never do something like that. He's a man of God, after all. He has my unquestionable trust.

Honestly, I can't stand this momo.

And no. Pedophilia was NOT considered normal in the 70s. WTF??? Who does he think he's talking to? Does he think nobody listening to his idiocy was alive in the 70s?

I have to say that, though I understand where the Pope seems to be coming from, I fervently disagree. Religious leaders are universally held to a much higher standard than the rank-and-file.

If you have difficulty with this, just ask Jimmy Swaggart (among others).

I don't understand where this pompous pope is coming from at all, except (as Usual) to try and place blame on those that have done no harm. He's probably a pedophile himself.

At no time has society "overall acepted it" (pedophilia). That is a ridiculous thing to say, but such is his stock in trade.
