How can God be an example for us if the God of the Bible practiced the most unethical acts? One might note that, in addition to countless crimes against humanity, this god killed a baby of an adulterous affair. So much for pro-life!

The god of the bible makes Stalin, Mao, Hitler, Mussolini and Pol Pot look like pre school bullies.

My first question would have to be "Which god?"

I would ask that you suspend everything you have learned in Sunday School or picked up on the street about the Bible.

First, it is not about God. The Bible has always been centered on people, how people should behave, how they should view a particular God. And, the Bible really never became codified until virtually the middle of the 2nd Century b.c. Up until that time, it was a mixed bag of traditions, stories, poems, tall-tales, and a great deal of borrowing from religious stories of other religions.

Second, whenever we read of a particular God acting in a story, this God is an invention of the writer, a technique used in "the old days" for getting across his moral point.

Third, a lot of behind-the-scenes actions were occurring over hundreds of years that are not well known to modern, average people. Prior to the "final" establishment of a male-dominant monotheism, the ancient world was dominated by a female head of a pantheon. Much of the OT is filled mystical and/or spiritual battles against this female authority in favor of a single male god.

So, by looking at the Bible stories in the spirit in which they were written, in the traditions they were written, and in the formulas they were written, we realize that this terrible God, a mosaic of many threads, patterns, fragments of other myths and stories, just does not exist.

It is of no wonder that the Christ tried to reconcile man with man and man with God. Mankind has pretty much screwed up everything, especially since no God-in-the-sky (at least since the time the gods departed the Earth roughly 3,000 years ago) has come down to Earth and spelled it all out.

Is God of the Bible ethical?

When you are a mythological entity, ethical is kinda beside the point.

Why do people always blame God for all the negatives? If God is Love, how can anyone possibly equate a negative with that? God didn't do anything as the OT describes. Man did those atrocities because those were man's thoughts and ideas on how to treat each other. As time went on, God got the blame. God is Love and He can only Love. Anything that is not done in Love is not of God.

I guess the confusion comes when we are told the bible is the "inspired" word of God. Would God have "inspired" writings that blames God for all of the atrocities?

God only inspires to do things in Love. Men have twisted His ideals and inserted their own thoughts and desires since the fall of mankind. As more people wake up to the realization that Love is the "word" of God, all those false beliefs will fall away and we will then know how to Love one another without any negatives. We won't see it in our lifetime but you can bet our g-g-g-g-g-grandchildren will.

People also need to learn to think for themselves. Too many rely on someone else to tell them how to live, act, breathe and what to believe.

God only inspires to do things in Love? Many of the stories in the Old Testament tell of God commanding some individual to kill all men, women, and children to take a piece of land, did he not? How loving is that? I have learned to think for myself and do not just see the Bible without rationalizing things if they make sense, not just because the Bible says so, take care.

There is already a word for love; love. Falsely metonymizing a figure(in this case, the Abrahamic God) with a concept does not somehow link everything the figure is involved in with the concept or vice versa.
