Hello all you believers out there! I thought I'd introduce myself in this thread by discussing the logical contradictions of Heaven within a generically Christian framework. I'm pretty new at this but I've been a seeking atheist for, oh, 6 years.

I'm just going to start the discussion on familiar ground: God desires our obedience but wants us to do so freely. Disobeying god in heaven is not possible. Therefore there exists a place with no free will and god denies himself his own desire for us! Granted, you may say that we are free to disobey once in Heaven, but we don't want to (which is limiting our choices to strict obedience by constructing such a place.) Or that if we do disobey we will be punished for it, in which case why call it heaven at all but Earth 2? If the purpose of Earth 1 is to weed out the disobedient, then having Earth 2 is overkill.

Another thing about Heaven is that it is "eternal". Do we get to choose to not exist or is existence in heaven so great that an eternity there will never feel like enough? And if god only wants obedient people to enjoy this, and we by free choice are not satisfied, will he punish us instead or cease our existence?

Another thing about Heaven and souls is that we KNOW in order to make choices that we need a biochemical unit known as the brain. How do we make choices without our neurons?

If you ask me it all seems a bit fishy. No one has ever been to Heaven, or the one's who have we must take on face value as the unverifiable truth. And that's another thing: why would god want us to make choices based on ignorance? People have made up stuff before. All religions claim to have the truth and they can all pretty much contradict each other. A path in one religion that leads you to hell may lead you to heaven in another. Basically, how do you know the writers of your holy book weren't making ***** up like everyone else?

OK, over to you guys now. Just reply to whatever you want.

I will reply when I am not so tired.

My question is --- what is a seeking atheist? I have not heard of this before and was curious as to what it means, thanks.

It is not the neurons in my brain that allows me (or anyone else, I think) the capacity to make choices. Granted, I must have a functioning brain in order to think, to respond to what you posted. (Which, I might add, I am not so certain that mine is "working up to speed" this morning!)

I think we are far more complex than simply the sum total of our nuerons and physiology. Our emotions develop along with our brains, and minds. I suspect that our choices stem from our psychological makeup.

--And hopefully, from a bit of our hearts...

Signed,
June, fellow athesit and heathen
