In Islam we are forbidden to eat any carnivore, Swine, Bird of prey, insects, or Reptiles, However we are permitted to eat anything that lives it's entire life cycle in water. We also are forbidden any form of intoxicant.

But in the event of famine or other reasons and it is necessary to eat forbidden foods to stay alive, we are permitted to eat sufficient quantities to maintain life.

I should had said mammalian Carnivores are forbidden. I was too vague I was trying to do a lazy answer instead of enumerating the various individual animals.

The forbidden animals are Swine, Land mammals that eat meat. All land reptiles even if just part of their life cycle is on land. All Bats even if they are fruit bats, All flying birds of prey, all amphibians.

Also any animals that are not killed in a halal manner are forbidden. That eliminates quite a few as many animals are not docile enough to kill in a halal manner.

Our diet restrictions are nearly identical with those of the Jews and Sabians. Of the 4 Abrahamic faiths only Christians do not follow them. But,
some who call themselves Christian also follow the same restrictions.

Nearly all sea animals are predators. We believe Allaah(swt) made his restrictions to be possible to follow with out any undo hardship. If predatory sea life had been forbidden, sea travel would have been an impossibility. Before the days of refrigeration, those at sea had to eat what they could catch. Many of us see the diet restrictions as being a form of obedience, and not necessarily because of health benefits. Although there may be those as a fringe benefit.

Sharia did not come about until nearly 200 years after the Qur'an and Ahadith. Islamic jurisprudence is based upon Islam teachings and the Sharia laws are supposed to be in conpliance with Islamic teachings from the Qur'an and Ahadith. Their are 4 different schools of thought regarding Sharia and 4 distinct concepts of Sharia. A fifth if you count the Shi'i concept of Islamic jurisprudence. While there is virtually 100% agreement in terms of civil law, there is considerable differences in the Criminal law, especially in regards to punishments. the Sunni Hanafi school which I follow makes the death penalty almost impossible to implement while Jiyyat (I may have messed up the spelling) school followed by the Shia seems to be tossed out like popcorn. The other 3 Sunni school fall somewhere in between. Among the Sunni the Hanablis School of Jurisprudence followed in Saudi is the strictest.

The dietary laws came long before the Shariah and are essential the same as the Jewish Dietary laws. The major difference is in regards to eating shell fish. The Jews don't eat it. We consider them to be Mahkoof, permissible to eat, but better if we don't.

That would still be difficult as getting intoxicated is a sin, eating/drinking/smoking something that can intoxicate is a separate sin. While it is permissable to eat what ever comes from the sea, there may not be any sin in smoking sea weed. the getting intoxicated would still be a sin. The loop hole is closed.

I put may not instead of a will not because if the person knows ahead of time it is going to get him intoxicated and they smoke it for that purpose it would most likely be a sin.
