If God cares so much about as believing in him that he will punish people for not believing in him, then why not provide the kind of evidence that will convince the 70% of the world who are non-Christian?

You have to say this to yourself :-
If God does exists then he is greater than anyone of us to ask this question and if he does not exist then what is the benefit from such a question .

The question should be, why does Man choose not to see him?

The same reason Thor, Zeus, Sauron, Elves, Dragons, Bigfoot and Leprechauns hide themselves.

The great, late Aryeh Kaplan wrote an awesome book on exactly this subject. If you're truly interested in knowing, I'll see if I can find you the title. The summary of this 100 or so page book is basically this:

G-d does not reveal Himself in direct form, because humankind couldn't handle it. The last time He revealed Himself (at Mount Sinai), He did so to the holiest people on the planet, and even they couldn't handle it. We are such a spiritualy depraved people in these times, it could ruin us. So He gives us lots of clues, and makes us do the work to be able to "see" Him.

And btw, where in the bible does it say He will punish us for not believing in Him? That's a very un-Jewish concept, I can tell you that.

So God is unable to take a form palpable to humans?

How are we supposed to handle him in heaven?

And why don't he just leave a clue that will erase any doubt? For example, why doesn't he make a prophecy specific enough so that we could not help but be convinced? What if God predicted a natural disaster or predicted a scientific discovery?

Belief in God requires faith. It's not God's job to make you believe in him. You have free will to believe what you want. And besides, those who don't believe now likely wouldn't believe it anyway. If God himself knocked on your door right now would you believe it was him?

And when Musa came at Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him,
he said: My Lord! show me (Thyself), so that I may look upon Thee.
He said: You cannot (bear to) see Me but look at the mountain, if it remains firm in its place, then will you see Me;
but when his Lord manifested His glory to the mountain He made it crumble and Musa fell down in a swoon;
then when he recovered, he said: Glory be to Thee, I turn to Thee, and I am the first of the believers.

He said: O Musa! surely I have chosen you above the people with My messages and with My words,
therefore take hold of what I give to you and be of the grateful ones.

Well, obviously the OP is referring to the Conservative Christian viewpoint.
