After nearly three decades in the Bible Belt, the number of brothers marrying their sisters has declined by 22 percent. The sudden drop has been attributed to a new campaign against incest in Tennessee.....
The Evangelical Spectator: July 2007 (http://evangelicalspectator.typepad.com/the_evangelical_spectator/2007/07/index.html - broken link)
I had to do a double take when I read that link. At first I thought it was serious but then I saw the title "Tall Tales of The Bible Belt". You do occationally hear about distant cousins getting married but not a brother and sister. I was surprised to read that some European countries don't even have laws against it. I'm not sure what to make of that website though. It's kind of an amusing mix of humorous stories and things that might be true. I'm not quite sure which category this article falls into.
Quite funny. I'm an east TN native, and though I've never heard (locally) of siblings having ever married, like most things, the ridiculous rumours do have basis in truth. My grandparents (both sets) are fourth and cousins, my parents are related (more distantly) and so I suppose I'm related to myself... I'm related to my significant other (9th) and my roommate's girlfriend is both his cousin (by marriage) and mine. My roommate and I are third cousins, but he's not related to her through me because it's on a different side...
All very confusing, but Southerners pride themselves on keeping family lineal info in their heads, right?
Confusing is when you marry your son in laws older brother. Then you become his stepmom. Or do you become a stepmom-in-law? Technically and scientifically, you can have the baby but then what would that baby be, your stepson-in-law's half-sister-stepsister-in-law??
