To be honest, considering the source, it didn't really bother me. Their ilk considered John the apostle and Paul to be non-Christian.

So basically, I think that's how those people that you don't believe to be Christians feel. They consider the source and know in their hearts who they are. They know that Jesus Christ accepts them as His, even if you don't.

So why is that? If god is the father and we are god's children, why would god not want us to grow up and be like him (i.e. like the Mormons believe)?

Just for the record, I think men are destined to become "gods"... through the power of science. One day, science and technology will allow humanity to do everything the biblical god is described as doing. There might not be a god today, but provided we don't do something stupid as a species and kill ourselves off, perhaps there will be.
This is what Adam and his cohort Eve tried to do and what happened? They suffered from their big flop aka The Fall.

What God, our Creator and Heavenly Father, offers to each of us is the ability to become as He is... to have the same attributes, which are possessing a Love that is Divine (without sin), patience, wisdom, mercy, tolerance, peace, gentleness, and humility.

In order for us to become as He is, we must become Divine. There is only one way to do this. Ask Him for His Divine Love to transform our souls. With receipt of this Divine Love, we will eventually become the true Children of God... Divine Angels. While we won't become God, we will be equal to Him in these Divine Love natures and we will become immortal. Having immortality could very well mean the "sky is the limit" in the highest Heavens above.

But before I forget, it's possible to become a Divine Angel on earth. It just takes the time and the will to make it happen, as Jesus made it happen.

Do you have a single verse in the Bible that says anything remotely close to that?

Good for them. Keep in mind....I have yet to make a statement about anyone not being Christian on this thread, and I'm not sure I have said that on these forums, at all.

Ezekiel 36:26 “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.” [This refers to the transformation of the soul by God's Divine Love delivered by the Holy Spirit.]

Luke 11:13 “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” [Ask and ye shall receive God's Divine Love.]

Luke 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our hearts burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? ["Our hearts burn within us" is the evidence of the inflowing of God's Divine Love into our soul.]

Romans 15:13 “Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” [Divine Love brings joy and peace and so much more.]

Acts 2:32-33 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. [Jesus is God's Son. He was the first human to receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit, Divine Love, which is the essence and substance of God. Adam and Eve rejected it.]

None of those suggest anything remotely close to us becoming Divine.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! [Christ is Divine Love. Jesus became the “Christ” after his soul was fully transformed and at-one with God, therefore, becoming Divine. We may follow in Jesus' footsteps if it is our desire to do so.]

2 Peter 1:3-4 His Divine power has given us everything we need for a Godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these, He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. [Divine Nature having no sin.]

Galatians 5:16-17 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. [The Spirit means the Holy Spirit which delivers God’s Divine Love into our soul. The Holy Spirit is the highest energy of God’s soul. It isn’t a separate entity.]
