The question is best answered by the right perspective. We are the children -- away at school after a manner -- and He is our Father watching from a distance.
Now most parents don't mind too much hearing their children express gratitude for all the things parents do for their children, etc. They don't mind being told how wonderful and great they are. But that's not really what a parent wants from their children. What a parent wants their child to grow up to be good, honorable, happy, productive and to be the best person they possibly can. And while growing up, they want all of their children to help and love each other and to play nice together.
The purest form of worshiping God is to be the best person you can be, to love everyone and help others who are in need. That makes Him MUCH happier than hearing His children thank Him and praise Him over and over and over again.
The initial question, Why does God want us to worship Him? contains the flawed assumption that God wants our worship. To experience what a silly assumption that is, put yourself in Gods shoes for a moment. If you were busy running a universe containing 6 billion people on just one tiny planet, do you think you would care if someone chose to worship you or not? I don't think so! There's too many other things going on to be concerned with such a trivial matter.
It's such a human perspective question. If I was God of the universe I'd want you to do what I wanted you to do because I wanted you to do it. It's my air you're breathing.
Why God want's us to worship Him? God does not have an ego problem, that He wants us to worship Him to feel better, to tell Himself that He is mighty, powerful and that He is God and therefore He wants us to worship HIM. BIG NO! Why? God is still God whether we worship Him or not--- for He is complete Himself. First, what is worship? here is an example, I have a friend who loves Marie Digby (Singer) so much! Everytime we see each other, She would tell me that , hey marie has new cover, concert, album, song etc. Everyday She would talk about marie, keep on thinking marie and she's happy about that. Sometimes She dreams about marie and evrthing-- She buys posters, cds of marie and keep on thinking marie, it's like, Her world keeps on spinning becasue of marie. She would dress up like marie-- Until one time I told her, you now LOOK EXACTLY LIKE MARIE. Get the point? That's worship actually means. When you worship something, you become like what you worship. That's what God's wants us. He wants us to be like HIM (Be Holy for Yur GOD is Holy), we can only do that if we worship HIM. God does not need us, but WE DO need HIM.--- That's one of the very secret of salvation (HE now becomes the CENTER of your LIFE), you do everything for HIM and to HIM--- And when we become like HIM--- we now have found true HAPPINESS.
So we worship GOD because we love HIM. He is our IDOL, since HE now is our IDOL, we would always talk of about HIM and be like HIM.
Because in the beginning there was God, and nothing was made without Him!
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
2 Peter 3:5
But they deliberately ignore the fact that long ago the heavens existed and the earth was formed by God's word out of water and with water
John 1:3
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
S/he/it does not, and never has, required worship.
Although appreciation could hardly go amiss.
God does require our involvement, participation and yes, devotional worship! People have to love the God that gives them embodiment since there are 2 other souls in heaven who got denied. Those 2 others have to wait their turn to be on this planet! If you don't love God for getting you in the door, you are an ingrate.
