Hi group: I hope someone can help me with this. We have been invited to a colleague's kid's bar mitzvah and have no idea what is customary to wear and what kind of present to give. There is an event on a Friday but the big even will be on a Saturday morning-thru-afternoon. I will appreciate any do's/don't for ladies dress (need to cover shoulders?) as well as what recommendations for presents (cash ok?).
Go as yourself, dress how u would normally dress. be you.
I'll give you advice from a Jew.
Dress as modestly as you feel comfortable. Men will likely be wearing suits, and women in corresponding nice attire. Give the Bar Mitzvah boy a check. Then enjoy - should be a beautiful event.

Yep, this.
Typically "Sunday-best" church attire is good, but make sure it's comfortable. There will most likely be kippas available.
Friday night service will be a couple of hours most likely, and Saturday's service can last into early afternoon.
As far as skin, I'd suggest longer skirts/dresses, and covering at least the shoulder.

Just to expand on this: If you don't know the community, I'd suggest wearing at least partial sleeves and taking a light jacket or sweater. That way you can adapt to whatever the norm is at that particular synagogue.
