How can you have unity if even within your own religion there are hundreds of denominations and divergent philsophies?

Christianity has itself never been "unified."

The closest Christianity has ever come to being unified was when there were about 12 followers of the ma Jesus (and they were all Jews, of course) and then for a minute about three centuries later after Constantine and the Council of Nicea, but that involved the destruction and genocide and torture of a whooooole lot of "heretics."

We agree on the essentials.

Of course it is. I have great fellowship with Christians of many denominations.

And, I'm sure, disagree on many points with several others. Right?

Do you or would you have fellowship with Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist congregation?

How about one of those "liberal" churches that accept gays and same-sex couples?

Do you consider Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons on an equal footing with your brand of Christianity?

If Christianity is unified, why the need for so many denominations?

Non-essential issues, yes.

They aren't Christians. If you knew anything about the essentials of the Christian faith you would understand that.

Homosexuality is not an essential. I would be rather suspicious on their view of the essentials, though, if they disregard scripture on that.

The official teaching of the 3 of them disagree with the Biblical teaching on salvation, but there may be individuals within them that do have a correct understanding.

Worship style is a big one. Others such as organization/hierarchical issues may be different. My church is a non-denominational church that is part of a larger Missions organization. Prior to me becoming a pastor I attended a church that was part of a small conference of Bible churches. I almost accepted ministry positions in an E Free, a Baptist, and a non-denominational church. They were all compatible doctrinally.
