you know... when you look back on a mans life before they were a martyr, the story is often embellished, exaggerated and full of omissions after they are martyred. just sayin...

That's probably because corpses can't speak (unless you believe in mediums and the occult and that sorta stuff).
When someone is dead people can put whole stories in his mouth, because a corpse can't say that those who only use him for their stories are a lyin' pack o' vultures who prey on the dead.

I guess this is also the main reason why the Catholic Church proclaims that only deceased people can become saints. Because living saints are able to contradict the church.
