I'm not sure that there's such a thing as a state of total freedom. Human beings always have some constraints and limitations in place. Our very bodies have certain requirements such as food, water, oxygen and a livable environment that we can never be free from. As we age we're even more limited in what we can physically do and I suppose this restricts our freedom to do as we please. It's an interesting topic though and self actualization as it's been described seems to be more about purpose than about freedom. Freedom is a rather nebulous concept when you try to analyze it but purpose can be very specific. Self understanding is the key to opening up all of the possibilities and purposeful living is the means of acheiving the greatest amount of personal potential.
Creating meaning in life is what self-actualization is about. Understanding is the creation of meaning. Searching never ends for those who have once discovered the meaning of understanding. As Carl Sagan said "Understanding is a kind of ecstasy".
St. John of the Cross--Dark Night of the Soul...political or social freedom not required for spiritual freedom. It is an amazing book if you're interested in a fairly dense and powerful read.
