If god created the universe, who created god? How does god come from nothing?

Ok, I assumed that you were referring to the Christian God. If not then maybe disregard this response. I am currently wavering as to what my beliefs are, but that is a story for another day. I was raised a Christian (Baptist) and I can give you the gist of the theology. And it basically says God was, is, and always will be. The belief also is that the human mind is not capable of comprehending such a complex question and that's it. I suppose that I didn't tell you what you want to hear, but that's it. That's all that I have been taught to believe.

The idea is that something so thoroughly organized and complex up to incomprehensible as a single God, with no companion Gods, simply always existed with no external purpose, meaning, or reason for existing.

God is his own Universe, while our universe is only his cherished toy.

Generally, theism places god in a special category outside and beyond space and time and yet who somehow has the ability to insert himself into space and time and do stuff there.

I think it's simpler to assume that time as we know it has not always existed, that the universe itself is in some sense eternal.

The truth is no one knows and so everything we have to say about such matters is pure speculation. The least educated guesses are going to come from theology, though.

The standard christian response that god has always existed and does not need a reason for being is known as special pleading, and it is a logical fallacy.

Christians claim an exception for their god for no other reason than the fact that they have no answer to your question.

A concept I mull from time to time is that the Creator* came into being with the universe and may be indistinguishable from it.

But then my brain starts to hurt and I stop.

*I dislike the term "God." It's been corrupted beyond (ahem) redemption, by the biblical version.

Another God/Creator.
Maybe there are truths that are unique to our world, another set of truths that belong to other planets, and moving on out into space, more and more.

You can kindof see how life is based on layers of consciousness, by the way you move up in most educational systems. Unfortunately, after graduation (from high school or college), too many stop learning, stop seeking. But if you seek, you will find deeper meanings in everything.
