It seems like any kid who is raised in a Christian setting will hear countless times about how premarital sex is against the Bible and about how he/she should wait until marriage and blah blah blah. But of course characters in the Bible visit prostitutes, harbor concubines, sleep with their maidservants and all that jazz, without no implication that they did anything wrong. Where did this emphasis on Abstinence even come from?

By the way, you should watch Penn & Teller's episode on Abstinence. Go to 17:35 and listen to the virgins-by-choice talk about their expectations for their first time having sex lol.

Ultimately it comes down to God, who created the institution of marriage - marriage is a covenant. Sex is the ratification of the covenant. Much more there that I won't waste my time with here. We are way off the intent and design of marriage. That's all.

Probably from 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.

Leviticus 18;
Covers most of the subject.
Not a new testament invention.

1 Corinthians 6:18 reads: "Flee from fornication. Every other sin that a man may commit is outside his body, but he that practices fornication is sinning against his own body."

Matthew 15:19-20 read: "For example, out of the heart come wicked reasonings, murders, adulteries, fornications, thieveries, false testimonies, blasphemies. These are the things defiling a man; but to take a meal with unwashed hands does not defile a man.”

Mark 7:21-23 read: "'...for from inside, out of the heart of men, injurious reasonings issue forth: fornications, thieveries, murders, adulteries, covetings, acts of wickedness, deceit, loose conduct, an envious eye, blasphemy, haughtiness, unreasonableness. All these wicked things issue forth from within and defile a man.'"

Galatians 5:19-21 read: "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, and they are fornication, uncleanness, loose conduct, idolatry, practice of spiritism, enmities, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, contentions, divisions, sects, envies, drunken bouts, revelries, and things like these. As to these things I am forewarning YOU, the same way as I did forewarn YOU, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s kingdom."

It is about "fornication". Look the word up in the dictionary. "Google", "What the Bible says about fornication" and you'll be able to put it all together.

Just take a look at society. More people than ever are infected with some incurable STD. The rates have been rising since the 1970s. I think it's admirable and advisable for anyone to wait until marriage these days. Rant and rave against Christianity's stance against pre-marital sex all you want but the statistics are on our side.

Sexual repression is rife thoughout the bible and xian dogma. Sex is real and tangible and god is not so somehow they had to ursurp nature to try and make sex something icky and sinful. As for the patriarchs, yes the bible does tend to suggest polygamy and extra marital shenanigans even to the point where it is inferred that the father of the Abrahamic religions was offered a concubine by his wife and with approval.

These factoids are swept under the carpet of inconvenience as are all other parts that contradict or defy the laws of physics.

If you look at the prohibition laws pertaining to sex, one must wonder just how perverse these people were (if it were remotely true)

My kids 25 and 21 have had sex (even under our roof) and no baybees as we taught them the urges were natural and taught them to use protection. When base instincts to reproduce drive us, it is no time to actually settle down when folk are still growing up themselves. As the age of marriage is not 25+ on average for males, it is pretty ridiculous to think they can remain chaste till marriage.
