You know when to take text literal because of the context it is written in. Some is written as a historical record, some is written as poetry, and some is written as figurative speech (parables).
You can take that scripture literal, but the word light was written in a different context then how you are translating it. Saying something is a light doesn't mean it's literally a light, as you are trying to say. It's like saying the God is my Rock (Psalms 18:2). He is not literally a rock, but he is called one because of the attributes that he has.

I'll give you that one, because its only one of hundreds of inaccurate statements in the Bible, like differentiating the Sun from other stars, or Noah's dove bringing back a leaf of a fig tree though all vegetation had been underwater for months, and even though the tree had to be above the Earth's tree line.
