I don't think that was quite the insinuation.
If, indeed, the kid was on a psychotropic drug and it was ineffective or improper, it may well have contributed to/caused/ exacerbated the kids mental state.

But, in families were mental illness isn't on the table as a topic it often goes unnoticed and is not medicated. Tragic for sure.

I wish we paid more attention to mental illness in this country, and paid more for mental health care. It would save a lot of lives. Religious people often think God will take care of it though and blame the devil instead of a mental illness. This is one reason it's so under treated in the U.S.
10 to 1 he's perfectly sane.

It's all too easy to dismiss horrific crimes as the result of some sort of mental illness, but the simple reality is that mentally healthy people do horrible things all the time - the banality of evil, as Hannah Arendt famously called it. This wasn't some nut. This was a young man who had been methodically taught to hate blacks, systematically taught that they were the sources of all sorts of problems in his life.

I agree that mental illness certainly deserves far more attention than it receives in contemporary American society. But being a pissed-off, sporadically anti-social young man isn't the same as being mentally ill. We can't just dismiss horrible acts by passing them off as being done by mentally defective people. More often that not, they're done by the perfectly sane. For very bad reasons, yes, but bad reasoning itself is not insanity.

On a side note, this slaughter clearly wasn't about religion - it was done in a church because this particular church was a place where a large group of the people he wanted to kill (blacks) would gather. Of course, that isn't stopping one specific cable news channel and the Presidential candidates of one particular party from peddling it is an 'attack on faith'.

We can start with blacks, they are very deserving. But then we will have to go down the line won't we. Women, American Indians, witch burning, Hispanics, Asians, Irish, Jews, Gays, etc. Let us not forget why we fled other countries to come here and their related histories of tragedy. If we change all the street names and take down the flags then what? Does he think that will take care of our memory?

I think people need to grow up and realize we've all come from tragic beginnings as far back in history as one can go. Our biggest feat seems to be overcoming our historic hurdles and moving forward. Soon, we will all be mixed to the point of no difference in appearance. Will will read about how people of different colors use to fight about it. America can always look back, but looking forward seems to be our biggest obstruction these days when most all is good compared to our ancestors, for everyone, not just white people.

We seem to forget, the Civil War was won by blacks and whites, not just blacks. That Africans sold their people and that helped start it all. 1/2 of this country fought and lost their lives to free slaves and 1/2 of them were white. It wasn't just a horrendous history for black Americans, they were the root sufferers of slavery but certainly not the only ones who suffered during the Civil War. Instead of trying to ignore history we should learn from it and move on, so that our future will be brighter than our past.

Aw but the media will suck every bit of life they can out of this first. It's to bad, and I think hearing about all those in the church shooting, it's the last thing they would have wanted. A race war. But, we all know it's the first thing CNN and the like are wanting. Ups the ratings and they don't have to travel very far to cover the war.

Those are exactly the signs you look for when diagnosing mental illness. With all these spectrum disorders on the rise we will see more. Anger alone doesn't usually progress to mass shootings. When it was against classrooms full or kids one can easily blame a mental illness but for some reason if it's a church full of blacks it's just racism.
There are racists and people who don't like children but they don't usually go postal. Maybe an individual fight, or gang activity within their objective, black gangs, white gangs, etc. But a lone gunman? Naw, but of course your are entitled to think all white guys who don't like black people will start shooting up black areas full of people if you want.

This will be about religion if they want it to. It all depends which agenda is being attached to it. He had the devil in him is something I'm hearing often, he's "evil" etc.

One reason mental health goes untreated is because it's referred to as just a hateful person, evil man, the devil, mean spirited. When clearly the signs of it are loner, aggression, over the top obsession. Those are the exact signs taught to look for in someone with a mental illness. Satan is one of the main excuses people use to excuse it. They usually try and use God to fix it.
You know how many kids with Tourettes and Autism were exorcised by the "church" as treatment historically?

We still don't understand how to deal with mental conditions, and we never will as long as it's eye for an eye type of caveman behavior. It needs way more research and since it's growing like the plague we might want to get a handle on it.

People using emotions to comprehend behavior are often misguided in my opinion. But, we just disagree on this one. You think he was just a mean racist white guy, and I think there was more to the picture, he wasn't sane.

And to note, the KKK was a gang. There is gang activity of all colors in the U.S. Totally different arena and mindset. Plenty of white and black people are killed from gang turf violence daily.

Charleston Shooter To Black People: You're Raping Our Women' ‘You’re Taking Over Our Country. You Have To Go.’

So the shooter openly admits this was a race driven act. Why then is the entire right wing saying he was attacking christianity?

They will not say it's about race. And why is he not a thug? Or a terrorist?

Eric Garner was allegedly selling loose cigarettes he's dead,
Mike Brown allegedly stole some cigars, he was shot down in the street.
Walter Scott shot in the back while running away had a gun planted on him on video.

This guy shot and killed 9 people in a church for being black, he gets led to the car wearing a bullet proof vest the cops put on him.

People please!
