This isn't a surprise. People are getting tired of the GOP culture wars and the Southern Baptist Church is up there among the worst offenders of preaching politics from the pulpit. I wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that the rise of atheism is to blame as much as the fact that conservative denominations like the Southern Baptist church today is little more than a political machine.

Then there is this.....Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived......Isaac Asimov

I have found that to be true, yes. Especially the ascension story and the account that all of the stars will fall from the sky in Revelation.

Face facts Jeff, your version of belief will be gone within a couple of generations or less.
People have been trying to stamp out Christianity since the Roman era. (which says a lot about the truth of our faith) We're not going away. The same people in these polls who say they have turned away from religion wouldn't hesitate to ask for prayer the moment the chips fall in their life and tragedy strikes.

Lol! What about Islam? It's the fastest growing religion in the world today. Better convert to the True Religion of Islam before it's too late!

You're engaging in psychological projection. There are plenty of people who face tragedy without resorting to desperate tactics like prayer. There really are atheists in foxholes.

You're unwittingly admitting that prayer is an irrational act of depression.

Actually the opposite is true. One form of Christianity or the other has been trying to stamp out non-believers and other religious viewpoints since at least the Middle Ages.

It's what makes individual forms of Christian cultism like fundamentalism so very, very dangerous.

Heck, one form of Christianity has been trying to stamp out other religious viewpoints since the third century, if not earlier.

Christianity is here for the long haul.

Fundamentalism is dying. And good riddance.

Ahh, the old no atheists in foxholes lie....Sorry Jeff, but it IS a lie.

It would be a far better world if there were no religion in it...If I could help stamp them out nothing would make me happier.

Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion - several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven......Mark Twain

“This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it”....John Adams.
