Selecting a specific date for the 'end of the world' is unusually risky. You don't hear too many people chirping about May 21, 2011...mainly because Harold Camping was wrong (and, it seems, not for the first time).
Is it possible that the Mayans knew something when they imagined the current world cycle to end cataclysmically at the end of 2012? Sure...but it's every bit as likely they were wrong.
