Short version...best friend of 30 yrs...took care of her boyfriend, a retired lawyer, for last
year and a half.
Atheist, 'nothing' after we die....
Well, at 1 am he is saying. "There is this world! It's so real!" Goes to sleep....
"There is this beautiful place, why can't I stay there?" Goes to sleep...
"Do other people see this?!"
Anyway she found him at 2:30 am with a smile on his face.
The funeral people taking his body said they never see this...."He has a smile on his face!"

So sweet.
All dressed up and no place to go.
There is no death really, it's just an illusion but you know that don't-cha. We are the universe having a human experience. It's that simple. No rational person can even sensibly argue it. Now what we can discuss is what is the universe and how does it work. But that doesn't even matter to the claim we are the universe having a human experience. personal Belief be damned, why would I be so selfish to think my belief is the belief to have.

It is nice to hear that when someone passes they went pleasantly. We all want to go like that. As an atheist myself it is not surprising that a fellow atheist could have a genuine joyous experience in death - no hell awaiting him or some god to judge him. Not to diminish this persons real experience but the brain can do all kinds of things during its final stages. I have even had some of those while on drugs - they can have similar effects. Anyway, good to hear
It is interesting that an atheist with beliefs that there is nothing after death would have this experience. Ordinarily it would be 'explained' as an hallucination brought about by the individuals beliefs systems etc etc... but there ya go.
Thanks for sharing.

I would explain it, as a hallucination, not by the belief system of the individual but by the dying brain. Of course the beliefs systems of atheists vary since atheism really is just an absent of belief in any god/s not an afterlife per-se. Of course most atheists don't believe in that either.

Our explanations are irrelevant. Our beliefs about it are irrelevant. It is what it is. We will all die. We can only hope ours puts a smile on our face too.

As a 'believer', there's no hell or punishing God waiting to judge me or him..or you!

As far as explanations go, well...an hallucination of a dying brain - what created the hallucination? The brain? Why? What does the brain care?
At the very least, you would have to include the consciousness of the individual in that process before it could begin to make possible sense.
'The Brain' is a biological organ and has no 'needs' or 'desire to survive and continue on'. It is like saying the heart has emotional feelings. As a metaphor, fine but you were not being metaphorical about the brain were you?

Correct. It is as if they realize that the subject of 'G()D' and the subject of afterlife are intimately connected.
Oh, gosh...I forgot...around midnight he woke my girlfriend and he was MAJORLY
clear and lucid!
He looked into her eyes and said...''Today is my birthday...it is also the day of my death..."
so he KNEW!!!
Gave her some instructions for his ashes and his millions...said she was his angel...
she certainly was...a nurturing, gentle person.
