Does America's Media Protect The Religious?
In America religion is seldom a theme for discussion/analysis in the mainstream. Ridiculing or pointing out flaws in christian ideology is a taboo.
Anyone who breaks this honored American tradition can be prepared to be the subject of a smear campaign.
From the media the christians must always be affirmed that only their beliefs are correct. That only their god is the true god.
Exceptions exist. It's acceptable to ridicule certain religious as well as those of no religious convictions.
If those in the media believe or not anything about religion is not important. The great numbers of America's christians are potential customers of program sponsors.
Does the media try to deflect any criticism of christianity? Or even fire back in the defense of christianity?
Does the American media protect christinanity by not reporting (or only token reporting) if christians (including catholics) are involved in scandals?
I think angering a large percentage of your viewers is generally discouraged. Particularly if those viewers can put pressure on sponsors. Still I've seen shows on the Learning Channel or National Geographic that criticize a variety of things about the Bible.
In entertainment I think there's a fair amount of shows that mock religion. South Park has on occasion and Family Guy certainly does. TV series usually assume that most Christian denominations are wrong on sexuality. Attacking "The Religious Right" is pretty standard in all media except Fox News.

The press is a powerful tool and has a long history of controlling the views of the masses. That said, we need to remember they are a business, and if they come out against organizations with power, such as the catholic church, it can cost them their corporate lives. As a result the media pull their punches, which results in a lack of trust for the press from both sides of the issues.
In recent months I have questioned many US Press reports, as well as questioning why they did not report the European sexual abuse till a month after it filled the papers overseas. I have yet to see them report on issues related to civil or secular crimes broken by the RCC, or why our government is not charging the priest and the pope for breaking secular laws. It seems both the media, and government fear that sacred cow.
well obviously atheists/non believers are a minority. i remember in the today show, meredith was interviewing this doctor about the death of natasha where she died when she fell while skiing. this doctor then proceeded to say " you can see our brain is still evolving..." then meredith cut him off and say " well thanks doc" and they went to commercial... that was funny as hell.
i dont get why americans hate fox news. the reason i was told is coz they are biased republicans. so it appears they are also religious.
You'll have to look to comedians on tv such as Bill Maher to find the closest thing to media taking an honest stance on religion.
Good observation. Maher is on cable TV and not viewed by those without.
