Magical thinking is a thought process where causative relationships are learned based on correlation alone. For example, believing that prayer is effective because you got better after you prayed for your illness to get better.
Is this the root cause of religion? Why else would people believe that the universe is controlled by a supernatural being?
I don't know if it's the root cause, but it's certainly a fundamental basis. It's emotionally comforting to think we can influence things we have little or no control over with things like prayer. It's also completely delusional.
the root cause of religion is that each person has a soul and seeks to know, understand, and be in relationship with the Divine because that is the truth of who we are, it is where we came from, and it is where we return
prayer is our connection to the Divine. our soul is homesick and likes to call home where we are known and loved and treasured.
our soul is a lot smarter than our intellect, because it sees farther and is wiser and has a more far reaching sweeping perspective. the intellect may arrogantly claim "this is all there is to life" but the soul knows there is more. far more. the soul invites us to grow and expand and advance and explore.

I posted in another thread about an experience I had last week while my Mother is on here deathbed. Her pastor, along with the elders of her church came by to anoint her with oil and pray for her. Prior to the prayer the pastor mentioned to everyone to not expect her to become completely healed after the prayer because God doesn't work that way. I thought that was very convenient. I don't know if he truly believes this or is just covering his arse.

What is the soul? Where on our body is it located? Do you mean our mind? If that's what you're referring to, that seems to emerge from our brain. After we die, our brain ceases to function, so if that's what you mean by soul, it's finite just like all other aspects of our existence.

So the root cause of religion is religion?
The idea of the soul, the divine, and returning to one's Creator comes from religion.

no, you have it backwards
that's like saying our body is caused by a medical text book
the medical text book is the map that describes and seeks to depict our physical body
religion is the map that describes and seeks to depict our spiritual world

the physical body is finite, the soul is not. your soul existed prior to your being born, it chooses to come into the body and gives it life, and when the body dies the soul leaves the body and continues to exist.

Spiritual world?
Where is that?
