Evolution as the mechanism of diversity is on solid evidentiary ground, but the "accident" plus survival and reproduction success meme exceeds the evidence. It is change (however sourced) plus survival and reproduction success. Our ignorance about the Source of the change does not equal accidental.
No, you are right. We don't know. The origins are one of those things we don't. What happened after life appeared we do know pretty well. I think we have enough of an hypothesis about the start, but we don't know. I won't try to say that we do.
