An ongoing survey on the BBC site shows that 86% of those surveyed agreed, religion causes more wars or strife and less peace.

Many of us atheists are thinking, "You mean there are people who think otherwise?".

BBC iWonder - Would the world be more peaceful without religion?

We are in the 21st century, and still there are many who believe fables from 2100 years ago. Crazy, but that is the way it is.

Those who create trouble in the name of religioin would have found another entity to cover up and do their dirty work, if there was no religion.

What the 86% needs to understand is that, "It's NOT the religion, it's some HUMANS BEINGS who simply camouflage themselves under the cover of religion and do ugly things to wrongly justify their heinous acts"

I know it would be more peaceful without certain atheists.

Really? What creed or dogma do that great big gathering of atheists follow? What 2000 year old fairy tales do they let be a major influence in their lives?

Of course you do. Were they to go *Poof* and disappear you wouldn't have all those pesky atheists challenging you and calling you out.

Personally....I'd miss the free entertainment.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without weapons.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without combustion.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without alcohol.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without sex.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without intelligence.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without human beings.

The world would be a lot more peaceful without life.

I can go on, but is this stupid or what?

Man is a religious animal. He fights for abstractions. The best he can do with all of these things with a potential for violence is to learn direct all these things to a positive use and to be prepared to make a stand when they are used to make trouble.

Didn't religion start hospitals, universities and charities?

Astonishing isn't it! I sometimes can't believe my eyes when I read some of the fundies here.

Now you're just being silly!

That's daft! There isn't much intelligence in the minds of people who think that the Bible/Qur'an is the word of a god...but they cause so much of the problems in the world.

Nonsense! Take a new born baby and keep it isolated from other humans. Do you think it will become religious?

Yes... but unfortunately, with regard to what you are trying to intimate, the religion wasn't Christianity but Islam. The Arab world had hospitals, universities, libraries and running water when we were still living in mud huts.

The OP said religion and that's what I responded to. Glad we agree on the positive influence of religion.
