I should probably take that route since I don't really have a beef with Christians or Muslims although I do disagree with the hellfire and brimstone/eternal suffering thing.

I get harassed by family members quite often. I get this hell threat quite a lot.
I used to fight back but now I just let it ride.
I would suggest that none of us debate like this in real life. I don't anyway.
There was one occasion that I had resolved to deck anyone who told me my son would go to hell because he took his own life. I have heard of Christians saying that to a parent. THAT I was NOT going to tolerate! But of course no-one did and I wasn't actually expecting anyone I knew to say it.
I'm sorry for your loss.
I can only think anyone who would say such a thing to parents who have lost children is struggling quite a bit on their own.
I would say more in terms of what may help comfort myself, but am probably going to get flamed for saying that much.

I was in Nicaragua late last year and went volcano boarding with my friend a fellow American and a bunch of other friendly tourists (Canadians, Australians, Europeans). We started chatting it up and upon saying we were American, we quickly fielded the question - so how many guns do you own? I didn't think much of it at the time but now wonder if they were assessing if we fall into the "God, Guns, America!" supporters. I think Americans should feel blessed / fortunate to live in what I feel is the greatest country in the world due to many reasons: our wealth, constitution, diversity in numerous things including 50 unique states, natural resources, geographic location with friendly neighbors to the north and south. But blessed and fortunate are quite different than superior and greedy.
