My wife has had a great deal of success on that diet, combined with a circuit training class, and has lost around 35 pounds on it. Everyone tells her to drink copious amounts of water, apparently that's very important.
I am diabetic, but it's fortunate I lost 80 pounds back in the 2001 time frame or I'd be in far worse shape than I am. In my case it was pretty much a matter of eliminating any liquids but water, cutting way back on bread, and walking regularly. Took 3 or 4 years to get it off but I've managed to keep it off.
