What are the attributes of Atheism to society.

What do atheists stand for, and what are they against.

godspeed,

freedom

Atheists simply do not believe in the supernatural.

Do you believe in unicorns? If not, do you believe that everyone who shares your disbelief is the same as you?

I haven't heard of any particular doctrine. There is no one book that says "You will live your life by this code." However, what I have noticed, and this is not a slander against religion, is that most (emphasis on most - NOT ALL) atheists are typically well versed in many moral philosophies, codes, and humanities. I think that many of us live our lives on a multitude of different secular learnings and although some may choose to side with one particular philosophy as a matter of personal choice, it most likely is not the only philosophy that they build upon.

To ask what atheists stand for or what they are against... As I said, that would define us as having some set form of idealistic belief. The only thing that separates an atheist from a theist is that we do not believe in God. We don't see evidence for it, and so we choose to live our lives as if one does not exist.

What can they contribute to society? How about a rational, non-dichotomized way of thinking? How about the freedom of thought to come to conclusions based on what we see as the result of a lifetime of learning instead of a lifetime of just accepting and taking for granted what we are told is the absolute truth? Other than that, to paint a picture of anything more is to say that atheism is defined by some sort of "code" and thus becomes a religion. The only thing any atheist has in common is his/her non-belief in a deity. That's it. It doesn't make us criminal, immoral, insane, or evil. It's just a non-belief.

We have already quite clearly and succinctly answered this question for you numerous times in other threads. The ONLY thing that "atheist" means is a lack of belief in any deity -- it's the only thing we are all guaranteed to have in common.

We don't have some Soooper Seekrit Organization where we stand around drinking Bloody Marys poking fun at all those who worship a god. We don't have any Unholy Tome of Devilish Rules to which we all subscribe. Nobody is our Fearsome Leader. We don't have a Council of Seditious Elders. We don't burn bibles or hang crucifixes upside down, and we certainly don't care what anyone else believes as long as they don't push it on us.

I don't know how much more clear we can make it.

Those are very good answers from everyone. I don't belong to any atheist clubs with secret handshakes and subversive ideas. The only interactions I even have with other atheists are right here on this forum. I just view myself as a person who thinks for himself and tries to behave in a morally responsible manner.

I just have to respond even though I shouldn't...

Roaminred...I agree but we do believe in telling it like it is....

We're not inhuman, freedom, and like was said we have explained all that several times. Why do you keep on nagging about the same subject?
I think you're just trying to start trouble here, not trying to understand because as soon as someone aswers you start saying how stupid and illogical and wrong we are.
You stick with your religion and we'll just go to our Top Secret Forum and do what we do......You have to be a pre approved member to get in though and give two vials of blood (for DNA testing) at the door.
