I find these cynical attitudes devoid of love and just about as anti-Christ, anti-God, and harshly judgmental as ALL unloving attitudes. Sad, very sad.
And you call us "magical thinkers", and you're upholding the "power of sending positive thoughts"... lol....you're problem is, like every other flesh worker, you want the glory for you, and not G-d's Spirit. Peace

The gesture has nothing to do with "power." It is simply conveying positive wishes and compassion. Criticizing it or denigrating it is beyond rude and boorish and conveys NO love of God and each other whatsoever. That you seem to do it in defense of your beliefs about God somehow makes it worse.

I don't think Rbbi1 will catch what you are trying to say, Mystic. I'm going to try to make it a little clearer:
It is NOT a matter of magic, it is simply a matter of expressing concern and how that should be received by the person to whom the expression is made. If someone tells you that they hope you will do better should you tell them it is futile to hope, just bcause no physical effect can come of it, or should you just thank them for their concern?

No, the thinking it will accomplish anything, IS magical thinking. Would I debate it with someone that said it to me? No. Will I point out how useless it is in a debate forum? Yes. Peace

And the point being made is that Mystic was not "upholding" any kind of "magical thinking," but common decency. I'm glad that youy can at least understand common decency.
Did you read mordant's post in this thread? I hate to quote every single post the guy writes and say 'nailed it', but I could.
It's empty in that what is implied is 'sending positive thoughts even as I do absolutely nothing else to attempt to assist in alleviating your condition'. Now, in a case where it's understood that nothing can be done to aid, such as in the case of 'riding out a hurricane' or enduring some debilitating illness, I personally would still prefer a more sincere and starightforward, 'thinking of you'/'concerned about you'. Or a more creative/idiosyncratic expression of sentiment, or an attempt at comic relief, etc. 'Sending positive thoughts' is cliche and effort-free.
Ok. "Sending terrible, negative thoughts your way!!"
How's that?
Is that acceptable?
sheesh.
I understand your irritation. It can be very frustrating dealing with dogmatists, sparrow. It seems even simple common courtesy and decency somehow annoys them.
