FOXNews.com - Police: Girl Dies After Parents Pray for Healing Instead of Seeking Medical Help - Local News | News Articles | National News | US News

Quote:
An 11-year-old girl died after her parents prayed for healing rather than seek medical help for a treatable form of diabetes, police said Tuesday.

Everest Metro Police Chief Dan Vergin said Madeline Neumann died Sunday.

"She got sicker and sicker until she was dead," he said.

Vergin said an autopsy determined the girl died from diabetic ketoacidosis, an ailment that left her with too little insulin in her body, and she had probably been ill for about 30 days, suffering symptoms like nausea, vomiting, excessive thirst, loss of appetite and weakness.

The girl's parents, Dale and Leilani Neumann, attributed the death to "apparently they didn't have enough faith," the police chief said.

They believed the key to healing "was it was better to keep praying. Call more people to help pray," he said.

Right, keep praying because god didn't know your kid was sick. Or...he was vindictive enough to let a kid die because the parents didn't pray enough.

Those parents should be prosecuted for manslaughter, and their other children removed from the house.

See - the anti-science Christians have been correct all along.
Nothing, not even the needless and avoidable death of one's own child, will stop people from living righteous lives completely free from the unholy darkness that is this world.
Praise the lord.

there's freedom of religion so the parents can't be prosecuted, I don't think so anyway...
I think it's terrible that a child died when she could have been saved. If only the parents had seen that their religion and the cult that tells them modern medicine is bad, is wrong. Why don't people open their eyes and let modern science in? People die every day because of old fashioned and silly beliefs. Just like how some can't have bloodtransfusions...that's stupid.
I just can't understand how anyone can let a person die because of their faith. It must blind them and their judgement ...

Oh my goodness, this is story for the media to eat up if I've ever seen one. Do we know how many children die from prescription drugs taken exactly how they were prescribed? Those stories never hit the media.

In love and light, may this little girl be blessed beyond the veil.

Well, this may sound terrible but I'd be able to live with it better if my child died after trying everything medically possible to save her/him than after not doing anything.... You can pray all you want and heck, let those who believe in god pray, by all means ...but medicine is needed too to save people. Sure people die from the wrong care but not doing anything is just wrong.

How utterly ridiculous.
We should shield our children from medical treatment because drugs have possible side effects?
Diabetes is a treatable condition. Perhaps drugs would have killed her, but the untreated disease was certain to.
Fear science. Fear the media. Only the lord saves. B******T.

Only to a certain extent.

Using the excuse of religion doesn't put one above or outside of the law. This wasn't even a case of refusing a blood transfusion (a la Jehovah's Witnesses), or a child not getting vaccinated. This was manslaughter, no matter what reason it has been cloaked within by the parents.

As I understand it, many states have some sort of religious exemption laws specifically for circumstances like this. They generally say something to the effect that parents can't be prosecuted for child abuse for using prayer instead of medical treatment. However, if the child actually DIES, the exemption law does not carry over and protect them from manslaughter charges. So, I hope the law hits these parents like the fist of an angry invisible sky-wizard.
