Yikes!
Religion can destroy lives as much as drugs can. But at least we warn our young people about the dangers of drugs.

We don’t warn young people about the dangers of religion. Not only that, but we allow adults to force-feed religion to children.

It might have destroyed me too if I hadn't had the support of non-JW's who took me in and allowed me to live my life free of religious suppression. I haven't spoken to some of my family members in over 40 years. I still have scars that will always be with me, but thanks to a supportive loving spouse, they don't debilitate me.

You know, I am no fan of the Jehovah's Witnesses, but it really does bug me when an entire religion is more or less held up to ridicule when a couple of its members go off the deep end.

I agree. I did say that the cult itself is not exactly to blame here. But if it didn't make them crackpots, it certainly did nothing to make them less so.

Well stated. And there's no indication whatsoever that anyone in any kind of a leadership role in any way endorsed or taught what was happening here. This appeared to be a mental illness issue.

It sadly reaffirms the fact that with some people stereotypes will never die. It's sad, but you'll never convince them otherwise...dust your sandals.

Many have suggested that on a continuum of mental health issues, adherence to a religion can fall somewhere along a spectrum. It's not all positive either.

Yes, I'm aware of the bigots that call religious belief a mental illness.

No, that is not what I said. What I said was that there was a continuum on that spectrum. Would you think that the Raëlians are totally mentally competent and not damaged? What about someone like Jim Jones?
