The OP is deceptively misleading (...I'm sure it wasn't intentional....).
I was interested in these findings, but couldn't find anything in the first linked article that referred to the impact of religion. So I went directly to the CDC report it describes, just released today; again I found no discussion of religion as a variable, amongst a boatload of other variables (if I overlooked or am looking in the wrong place, please correct me). Finally, I went to the second linked article, which does focus on religion and suicide, but has absolutely NOTHING to do with the headline article, and was published way back in 2004. While the CDC report is a population-based study (i.e., a large, all-inclusive, representative sample), the older study is based on a a VERY selective sample... namely, a small handful of patients already hospitalized for depression.
Not to get all sciencecy, but the methods and analyses in these two reports are apples to oranges, and make it next to impossible to draw any conclusions. Certainly not the ones in the OP.

If Jesus rescues us from one danger, He is only delaying the inevitable. Our time here is brief, regardless. Who knows, the Christians who died in those disasters may have faced great personal hardships in other forms if they had lived.
So then tell me: what is the benefit of being a Christian--I mean other than the benefit of this vague promise you accept solely on blind faith that you'll go to heaven when you die? I mean you Christians pray for healing for your loved ones and your loved ones die at the same rate as non-Christians. You pay 10% of your hard-earned cash to corrupt churchmen who live high on the hog at your expense while you get thrown out on the street because you lose your job and then cannot afford food for your family. Jesus doesn't ride to your rescue to drop manna out of the sky so your family won't starve. Jesus essentially just dumps you when you fall on hard times after you've served whatever purpose you've served.
So what good is it being a Christian without this blind faith of pie-in-the-sky? Doesn't seem like faith in Jesus did John Chau any good except get him filled with arrow holes.

An alarming trend was revealed yesterday. Despite medical advances and lower deaths by heart disease and cancer, the US life expectancy dropped after years and years of going up. Suicide is a big part of the problem, and the suicide rate has now hit a 50 year high.
This is the world atheism and secularism as created. More division, more hopeless, more conflict, less tolerance and less empathy. People have bought into the lie that there is no God, and no purpose to live. We are merely souless flesh and bone here to consume resources then die and rot. The vast majority of us will be completely forgotten from the next generations that get their turn at living.
And the research has shown a direct link between atheism and suicide.
That's the bed you made, so now you can get to lie in it. It is just sad that atheists dedicate so much time out of the few short decades we get in life into tearing down an institution that gives hope and healing to the masses.
Yeah.
Crusades, colonialism, inquisition, slavery, jihad...none of those caused mass population annihilation or anything.

Jeff, it is admirable that you care, but they can take care of themselves.
Yes, the world is increasingly becoming secular but that's because religion has lost its relevancy for some people; however, some secular people do revere God(s) it's just not in an organized fashion and fairly personal.
As for suicide rates, I could see that going either way. Some the atheist online may seem pretty miserable but IRL it's a non-issue for most.

Non believers feel free to choose self termination when faced with a debilitating illness. As opposed to believers who, because of their religious convictions, are required to ride out debilitating illnesses to their often painful and undignified conclusion.
NOT coincidentally, the US state with the highest suicide rate happens to be Oregon, a state which allows terminal patients the option of self termination. So, yes, suicide WOULD be higher among the non religious.
So, way to go believers in the remaining states for imposing your religious beliefs on the rest of us by forcing us all to suffer painful and undignified ends to our lives in order to conform with your archaic religious convictions.
NOW, let's talk about the reason religious people seem to be more unhappily married than non religious people.
Variation in divorce rates by religion:
Religion % have been divorced
Jews ...................... 30%
Born-again Christians 27%
Other Christians....... 24%
Atheists, Agnostics... 21%

And for us not always knowing how to counter you in the courts of Law?! And for building that Ark in Kentucky! Damn right we're pissed!
