Atheism is death and misery. I spent 14 years as an atheist, after losing my faith. I am eternally grateful that the Lord snatched me back! And, yes, He DID find me. Not vice versa. The Lord found me when I wasn't looking. But now that I hear the Lord's unmistakable calls, I offer myself to Him and accept the gracious gift of eternal life that's been offered to me!
I beg God never to let me return to that dark and awful place that is atheism. Never again do I want to be separated from God. Because I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior at age 12 or 13, God never really left me. But I see how He put enormous effort into bringing me back into Fellowship with Him.
I have spent over 30 years as an atheist, and I am quite happy and content. I do not find it dark and awful in the least, rather I find it liberating and peaceful.

I am neither dead nor miserable. That you needed faith in a God for you to feel alive and happy does not mean that anyone else does. Your blanket statements about others you do not know, as well as your rejection of all science you think might weaken your faith implies to me that you are not one whose statements I should take seriously. I am not saying you cannot be happy believing in your Gods but you are terribly mistaken when you claim that all atheists are miserable.
Whatever the cause is, it doesn’t change the bottom line.
We should try to find the cause and we should try to improve the numbers by fixing the underlying problem - but that’s a different topic. And to move into that direction, the first step, IMO, will be to verify and then agree with the findings posted in the OP.
Sure, verify that suicide rates are actually increasing and then investigate the reasons if this is so. The OP skipped the second step. Until one identifies the actual reasons, acting upon totally unfounded assumptions could result in an even higher rate of suicides.
I agree. Surely like the theist, not all who identify as atheist are insufferable, uptight buttholes. It may appear that way to some when some people use it, or any ideology as a means to an end.
IF...IF….atheists were more prone to suicide, I don't doubt a great deal of their unhappiness can be attributed to the way they were treated by Christians that declare them abominable.
I suppose of the results had been the reverse -- a higher rate of suicide among christians -- that the christians would then advocate that clearly there was something wrong with christianity. Ahem.
Some Christians believe anyone who commits suicide is destined for the Hellfire, so in that regard, yes some would advocate there was something wrong with that sect of Christianity.

I think this might be part of the problem fishbrains. Atheists can wander in a state of unburdened bliss that causes them not to pay attention to handrails, cliff edges, etc. and accidents might be perceived as suicides, falsely skewing any statistics.
It is said Atheists can walk through walls, looked for cannot be seen, listened for, cannot be heard. And can walk a hallway length of fine rice paper barefoot without making a single rip or tear...
I wouldn't waste a second blaming atheism for suicides, even there has been a genuine increase (which needs investigating first).
It'd be wiser to look at the caustic and hate-filled nature of people in this country, insufficient healthcare, the wedge between the rich and everyone else, and the current state of our government. There's plenty there to push people over the edge.

Or perhaps, it's less about the externals? Maybe we, collectively, are in need of more internal self-discipline in what sort of perspective we cultivate about ourselves, each other, and our circumstances?
