Miss Hepburn! The title of your thread is whether or not having Santa as your "go to guy" bothers anyone. If one is Christian, and by your post history I am assuming you may be, the larger looming question may be whether or not the fact that Santa is a serious Pagan would bother you?

The Dude's feet are firmly planted in Paganism, and you hanging with him is a great thing in my book, as the Pagans came up with all the fun stuff in Christmas anyway! So raise your Wassail Glass and toast the occasion!!

You may find the link below if interest...

Santa A Serious Pagan!

Web search says (was Bing, so I didn't say 'google "

"Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) is an association established in Rome in 1562 for the purpose of giving religious education. Its modern usage is a religious education program of the Roman Catholic Church, normally designed for children. In some Churches, CCD is called PSR, meaning Parish School of Religion. "

In other words, the CCD (Catechism) is a piece of the method utilized by Catholics to indoctrinate children into the prescribed manner of belief. In Protestant churches the same method is called Sunday School.

We currently do church with our family. I don't agree now with a lot of what is taught regarding Christian doctrine and orthodoxy, though I once believed it myself. I don't however consider learning this stuff in Sunday school as too dangerous for my young children because I am there to make sure there is a balancing view (or more pertinent spiritual principles) being put forward for consideration.

We have just watched a documentary of Michael Palin (one of the Monty Python actors) in North Korea, and have been mild ly horrified at the obvious fear driven allegiance to the leaders. However, here in UK we also have to shortly submit our end of year tax returns. I was contrasting North Korea's regime with that of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC - the tax department of the government) who's mantra is to "pay what you owe". Let's just say if you suddenly decided you didn't like that idea because really it is basically founded on unjust principles, not least a debt based society, where tax was originally foisted on people to pay government borrowing to pay for wars. What would happen if you didn't pay tax on monies above the tax free threshold, because you didn't believe it was right to do so, because you didn't believe that the governmental systems we have are the optimal approach....? It's a sobering thought.

These are difficult issues. I mean what the hell do you tell your pre-school children that the truth is...? I've certainly always gone along with the Santa thing until they themselves question it and ask me about their nagging doubts. My eldest (10yr old) worked it out a couple of years ago. But just today my 3yr old daughter said "Santa is real" or words to that effect. I just stayed quiet.

Yes, "what the hell do you tell your pre-school children that the truth is...?" I told my children the Santa myth when they were young and then counted on them developing the critical thought necessary to figure out that it is just a story for children when they got older. I never indoctrinated them with the "Jesus returned to life and then flew away" myth, however. When they DID encounter the Jesus myth, as expressed to them by their friends and classmates, they weren't buying it.

Isn't AA, a self proclaimed atheist? Why would he send his kids to such a place?

I think you have been praying to santa not God if that is what you believe.

I choose to send them on many levels.

the first and simplest is : I gave my child the ability to make a choice. I taught them both sides of the argument and most importantly I taught them about personality types and how those personality types express a belief. weather its christian, muslim, jew, or atheist, sick people express sick beliefs. Sometimes I wish so bad I was back in the fish bowl of "militant-anti-religion'. it was so much easier not having to actually think what that actually means.

think of it this way radius. I think of it like a school of fish. I showed my kids to swim in and out of the school as needed. They are outnumbered by adult children of abuse, addicts, and mentals. They need to navigate those waters.
