Did his male grandchildren explain why this is true or not true and does or does not bother them?

Or still is.
Yet that really was the problem ALONG with the cover-up and denial.

It would be for any organization, self-righteously religious or not.

There is something about the Catholic abuse cases around the world on TV now.

I think any such highly religious jobs attract people with problems to begin with. Why would a man join such an institution and live without sex, unless he has a problem with his sexuality to begin with? In my view, there is something wrong with the men that become priests...

Add to that the strong hierarchy within the Church, which also opens the door to abuse.

Nor are there the usual social controls unlike in society. When people feel they are not being monitored, they tend to do bad things that would be impossible if they were surrounded by normal people.

I hate to stick up for religion, but I disagree with you. There are people who are dedicated to their faith to the extent that they see a "higher calling". Many of those men are admirable people.

Higher calling or not, they can't get rid of their lower urges. It is odd to think that popes, priests etc. have to masturbate their entire lives

So you think masturbation is major religious issue?

No, but except for the very rare cases that someone is asexual, it is very unnatural and mentally unhealthy to live without the sexuality between two people.

Masturbation is against the celibacy rules also. If you are going to break the rules why stop at one if there is a willing partner

Nope to their theology that us not actively sinning

I can't remember the name of the novel and miniseries about the building of a Cathedral but you had a Bishop actively flogging himself to try to control his urges
