They can and they do. That seems to be the difference in my observation. If you can show examples to the contrary I'm all ears.
I think it's a mark of their faith. They are often ridiculed and laughed at by society when they do. But I've seen many Christian testimonies that were a result of the person seeing the forgiveness in a Christian, as if forgiveness is outside the norm of what is expected.
To you it may seem a wonderful thing to do. And you may be right that it impresses others. Maybe some, like me, would feel that there was something twisted about that. Ask yourself - WHY did they forgive? What did the fellow do that somehow enabled them to forgive him?
I was thinking. my grand mom can beat your grand mom analogy.
lets change that to my team can beat your team. we have a professional team going around beating up on college level teams, like theist college level, and that professional team runs its mouth about being the best ever and only logical choice of teams.
somebody else brings a professional grade to to play them. for a relative scale to check this "only logical choice" statement out. the original team whips out "oh no, we are just playing college level teams to show how bad they really are. we don't play other professional teams because it makes us look imperfect."
hmmm, thats kind of people I like to hang out with.

What did the murderer(s) do to receive forgiveness? Nothing! Absolutely nothing.
This child abuse thing is a touchy subject for many. I'm sorry now it was brought up...
Then you completely fail to understand.
The claim has always been that these people who lord over others -- no pun intended -- were "called" by god.
That begs the question why would god call common criminals like pedophiles, thieves, charlatans, those who prey on their flock and abuse their authority for sexual services, those who commit outright fraud and such?
And, how are we to know the difference?
The bible is silent on the matter.
Nowhere in the Old or New Testament does it explain how we're to discern the difference between those who were truly called and those who were not.
There is some gobbledygook about "false prophets" but it never explains how to identify them and it's not like they wear a neon sign or anything.
More to the point, those who claim to have been truly called can't even tell the difference between those who have and have not.
The pope was appointed by god, yet even popes can't know pedophiles in their ranks? Really?
Which brings us to the central point, which is that you can never know whether the man-in-the-pulpit was truly called or not.
That's three reasons right there to never go to church.

Or send your kids to school, or Boy Scouts or gymnastics.
some people just don't apply the same rigor to their belief as they do other beliefs.
