The scientologists own the Fort Harrison hotel in Clearwater Florida.

Cults like fancy buildings as a way of showing off.

Same crap - different piles.

Funny thing. I look at that and find myself unmoved. It is a fact of life that big corporations (yes, the churches are that) will spend staggering amouts of of money on pointless gestures, other than in hopes to make more money while investing a small percentage in charity for publicity purposes and to be written off against tax, anyway. Not that Churches pay any.

First, this is not exactly news. The sale took place in 2011.

Despite being atheist/Buddhist, I don't have a problem with it. I think it's appropriate for some churches (not every church) to be inspirational.

Here's an interesting read on it: Modern Medievalism: Grand, Gothic cathedrals: a waste of money?

Buying that church isn't why there is still hunger in America or the world. Not when the world will spend a billion dollars to watch a movie.

That is true but the catholics spent another $33M or so to make it even splashier and now they are have their big to do very soon as I recall from the articles.

When I think of my years in that church and their begging for money, I can about gag...

Thinking about this comment and how some come up with life as being weird...

I can come up with exciting, interesting, fascinating, up and down, and just plain Life Is Good.

People are the weirds...

Got to thinking about where the "poor" can go on Sunday and thought of this cathedral. I am conflicted about the cost as I see different figures:
