Yes indeed. Especially if it is considered a thankless job. Also how much of one's time is devoted to moderation?
I moderated a large, busy forum for a decade. I did so as a favour to the administrator, who was a friend. I probably spent 25-50 hours a week on it and was unpaid. I made many friends and more than a few enemies. Two of the latter harassed, stalked, and threatened me and my family for several years until they were caught and charged. One went to prison.
It's thankless in that it is done for free. But I learned much about human nature and as mentioned, made several treasured friends.

I was asked to moderate a progressive women's forum, a forum i personally enjoyed very much and learned a lot from, made and met many friends. It consisted of educators, scientists, writers and artists. It was extremely active as a listserv, and still exists but not so active now. It was all volunteer, hosted by a university, non-commercial, and the posts could not be shared outside of the list. One person was banned because she did. It was a liberal, radical even, forum and moderation was minimal.
I lasted one year but I value the forum and the experience. I just did not enjoy the role of moderating. I felt like I was on 24/7

I did on a gaming server for around ten years. That was a different setting then this so I had many more friends. Especially those that weren't in the click. I didn't give hoot ... friend or foe. Follow the rules and explain them clearly goes a long way. Explaining the rules honestly, when they clearly look unfair, goes a long way.
