This supposed to hurt my feelings or make me feel bad? Lol
Not sure about either, but given your questions that I quoted, I think best to just leave them be and move right along. To get back to the topic of this thread if nothing else...
My questions were rhetorical. I suppose if I visited the Judaism/atheist forums I might have been aware of these things (or maybe if I paid more attention to people here who say they're Jewish?). Your comments actually gave a lot of context. This topic is about spirituality and character (at least that's what the subject says), and I was responding to a recent comment you made, so I think I'm on topic. Carry on......
My wife was concerned (a little more than necessary as usual) about how it seemed I was losing my voice a bit. Asked me to mention this to the doctor during my next physical. I did, and she referred me to an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who listened to my tale about why I was there and agreed with me that losing my voice a bit was probably nothing. Pretty much to be expected to some extent as we get older.
Then he said, "but long as you're here, let's have a look anyway."
Next thing I know I'm getting some sort of fluid into my nose that drips down your throat to numb everything up a bit before he then inserted a long scope down through my nose and into my throat. No fun but not as bad as it sounds.
Good news is that the pictures of my throat all looked "healthy as could be" according to the doctor. I said I thought so, but it's nice to have confirmation all looks good, because having smoked as a teenager up until about 10 years ago, I've always been a little concerned about the damage done. Doctor said there are no signs of having smoked that he could see.
No doubt it pays off to quit even if later rather than sooner. I don't see it as a crapshoot, although I know what you mean. Sorry about your friend. No matter what we do, one never knows what will get us eventually. I'm hoping for me it's a bus.
Not good for the bus driver or any passengers. I've been on a train that killed someone, a suicide. We were held up for a couple of hours.
Unfortunately, too many people know all too much about the negative consequences of alcohol abuse, but few of even those people really know much about the actual manner in which alcohol affects the brain and the chemical explanation for why the problem is so serious for alcoholics. My friend who ended up becoming an alcoholic is a very intelligent guy, and he used to give me all the technical reasons and explanations for why alcoholics become alcoholics. After I'd listen to the comprehensive explanation, I'd ask him, "so what does all that knowledge do for you in terms of quitting?" He'd have to admit not much...
Ultimately, no matter the reasons, explanations or excuses, every alcoholic has to somehow manage a "mind over matter" small miracle and finally just quit by sheer force of will. A miracle that doesn't ever happen or last too long for too many.
it is not "force of will."
recovery is not "force of will."
Evaluating other’s character by looking for defects in them makes one’s own disposition that of a curmudgeon. Not a good indicator of one’s own mental health, leave alone character. Far better to look within and cure one’s own defects, and try to be kind and accepting of oneself and others. That is a mark of a healthy character.
I see nothing has changed about your <<cut>>. Looking for defects in someone's character is how we determine if they are a good fit to be in one's life. It does not make anyone a curmudgeon except for you maybe. And what in the unholy hell does mental health have to do with anything? I have to say that both of those insinuations are completely insane and looks like you are grasping for anything to argue and complain about. Kind and accepting? Look in the damn mirror.

Reason: Personal remark removed.
In kindness, I have to tell you that sarcasm never works in the written word. It just reflects poorly on those that attempt it.
If you were not being sarcastic, my answer is no, there are many kind-hearted people in the world that do not ascribe to religion or its belief system.

When executed properly, it works just fine for people with basic reading comprehension skills. It should be apparent that an atheist won’t say, in earnest, that his kind are nothing but violent criminals.

Exactly.
