I've seen hideously ugly attitudes toward the poor among many catholics.

So have I. Everyone will be judged for his actions, including you and I. Best to focus on our own attitudes and actions rather than that of others, since we're only responsible for ourselves.

What is your point? That bad Catholics exist? To that I'd agree.

However, it's fallacious to define a thing by its worst examples. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate Buddhism being defined by its worst adherents.
